According to preliminary data of National Bureau of Statistics of China:

Macro Indicators

l         GDP in 2006 totals 209,407 hundred million RMB, up 10.7% y-o-y. The growth in four seasons to be 10.4%11.5%10.6% and 10.4% respectively.  GDP per capita exceeds 6,000 USD in capital Beijing, 5,000 USD in Tianjing . (Ref. GDP growth 10.0% in 2003, 10.1% in 2004, 10.4% in 2005 )

l         The average registered urban unemployment rate at the year end being 4.1%, down 0.1 percentage point y-o-y.

l         National investment in fixed assets totals 109870 hundred million RMB, up 24% y-o-y, down 2 percentage point. 

l         National average consumer price increases by 1.5%. Housing price in 70 big and medium cities increases 5.5% y-o-y, down 2.1 percentage point.  The price of consumer products increases by 1.4%, service price by 1.8%. Industrial producer price increases by 3.0%, down 1.9 percentage point than last year.

l         State foreign exchange reserves at the year-end totals 10, 663 hundred million USD, increasing by 2,475 hundred million USD compared with the previous year-end. The rate is 1 USD =7.8087 RMB at the end of 2006.

Agriculture

l         All cereal planted area is 105.38 million ha., 1.1 million ha. more than the previous year.

l         The output of grain totals 497.46 mn tons, up 2.8% y-o-y; the output of cotton 6.73 mn tons, up 17.8% y-o-y.

Industry

l         Gross Value-added of industry increases by 12.5% y-o-y to 90,351 hundred million RMB in the year; of which, heavy industry increases by 17.9%, light industry increases by 13.8%.

l         The output of steels is 470 million tons, up 25.3% y-o-y.

l         The  output of automobile totals 7.28 million, up 27.6% y-o-y, of which the output of cars is 3.87 million, up 39.7%.

l         Total 480.14 hundred million of mobile phones was produced in the year.

l         Total 28,344 hundred million kwh of electricity were produced in the year.

Investment in Fixed Assets

l         Total domestic investment in the fixed assets stands at 109,870 hundred million RMB, up 24% y-o-y. The investment in real estate totals 19,382 hundred million RMB, up 21.8% y-o-y, of which 13,612 hundred million in residential buildings, up 25.3%.

l         Total 2,310 km of new railway, 3,60 km of electricified railway, and 93,720 km of new highway (of which 4,325 km of express) have been put into operation.

l         QinghaiTibet railway was open to traffic on July 1, 2006. The first phrase of the middle part of the Project South Water to North completed the accumulative investment 119 hundred million RMB. Three Gorge Project completed the accumulative investment 1,313 hundred million RMB. The accumulative 1,461 kwh (of which 492 hundred million kwh in 2006) of electricity have been produced by the operating generating-units installed in Thee Gorge.

Domestic Trade

l         The total sales of consumer products in the year totals 76,410 hundred million RMB, up 13.7%.

Foreign Trade and FDI

l         Total import and export stands 17,607 hundred million USD, up 23.8% y-o-y ; of which, export 9,691 hundred million USD, up 27.2% y-o-ywhile import 7,916 hundred million USD, up 20.0%, with surplus 1,775 hundred million USD, 755 hundred million USD more than the previous year.

l         The actual absorption of FDI stood at 694.7 hundred million USD, up 4.1% y-o-y.  The share of FDI in manufacturing sector is 57.7%, 11.8% in the sector of real estate, 9.7% in financial sector, 6.1% in the sector of leasing and commercial service, and 2.9% in the sector of transportation, warehouse and post service.  The number of new FDI enterprises is 41,485 in the year, down 5.8%.  

l         Total Chinese FDI abroad in non-finance sector amounted to 161 hundred million USD in 2006, up 31.6%. Total realized turnover of project Chinese enterprises completed abroad amounted to 300 hundred million USD, up 37.9%; Total realized turnover of labour cooperation abroad amounted to 5.4 billion USD, up 12.3%.

l         National tax revenues amount to 37,636 hundred million RMB (exclusive import duty and the tax on land), up 21.9% ( 6,770 hundred million RMB) y-o-y, 18% of GDP.

Transportation, Telecommunication and Tourism

l         Total 202.5 hundred million tons of goods were transported in the year. Of which 28.8 h. m. tons were transported by railway, up 7.1% y-o-y; 146.1 h. m. tons by highway, up 8.9%; 24.4 h. m tons by river transportation, up 11.0%; 349.4 h. m. tons by air transportation, up 13.9%; 3.2 h. m. tons by pipe, up 6.7%.

l         Harbours handle 4.56 bn tons of cargoes in the year, up 15.6%, handle 93 mn TEUs, up 26%.  1.57 bn of cargoes were handled for foreign trade, up 16.8%. The port of Shanghai handles 465 mn tons of cargoes, keeping the No.1 in the world. There are 12 ports in China with cargoes handled over hundred million tons, such as port of Shanghai, Zhoushan(Ningbo), Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Tianjin, Qinhuangdao, Qingdao, Dalian, Suzhou, Nanjing, Rizhao, and Nantong.

l         Total 200.8 hundred million passengers were transported in the year, up 8.7%. Of which, 12.6 h. m. by railway, up 8.7%; 184.5 h. m. by highway, up 8.7%; 2.2 h. m. by river transportation, up 6.3%; 1,961.3 h. m. by air, up 15.4%.

l         There were 4,985 million automobile for civil transportation purpose at the end of 2006, up 15.2% y-o-y. Of which private ones came to 2,925 mn, up 23.7%. Cars totaled 1,545 mm, up 27.2%, of which private ones being 1,149, up 33.5%.

l         Total 17.37 million fixed phones subscribers increased, accumulating to 367.81 million. There were 251.39 million subscribers for urban citizen, 11,642 ones for the rural at the year end. Total 67.68 mobile phones subscribers increased, accumulating to 461.08 million at the year end. The ratio comes to 63 phones(incl. fixed and mobile)/hundred people.

l         Total 124.94 million people entered China in 2006, up 3.9% y-o-y. 22.21 million foreigners visited China, up 9.7%. 102.73 million people from H.K and Taiwan entered Mainland, up 2.7%; China was visited by 49.91 million foreign tourists, with the revenue from international tourism 339.5 hundred million USD, up 15.9% and from domestic tourism 623 billion RMB, up 17.9%. Outgoing Chinese tourists totaled 34.52 million, up 11.3%.

Finance

l         Money M1 (Narrow money) 126,000 hundred million RMB at end of 2006, up 17.5%; Money M2 (M1 + Quasi-money) 346,000 h. m. RMB, up 16.9%; Money in circulation (M0) 27,000 h. m. RMB, up 12.7%. Bank deposit incl. RMB and foreign currencies amounted to 348,000 h. m. RMB, up 16.0%; Bank credit incl. domestic and foreign currencies amounted to 239,000 h. m. RMB, up 14.7%. Of  which, the deposit by enterprises amounted to 118,881 h. m. RMB, up 16.8%; the deposit incl. domestic and foreign currencies by urban and rural citizen amounted to 166,617 h. m. RMB, up 13.3%,  and 161,587 of the deposit was in RMB.

l         Total annual insurance premium of insurance companies amounted to 5,641 hundred million RMB, up 14.4%.

Education, Science and Technology

l         Total 400,000 students were recruited for master degree in 2006, and 260,000 graduated, with 1.1 million students at universities and colleges at the year end of 2006.  540,000 students were recruited for undergraduate degree, and 3.77 graduated, with 17.39 million remaining at universities and colleges. 7.41 million students were recruited for secondary vocational education, and 4.76 million graduated, with 18.09 million remained. 8.71 million students recruited in high schools, and 7.27 million graduated, with 25.15 million remained. 19.3 million students were recruited in middle schools, and 20.72 million graduated, with 59.58 million remained. 17.29 million pupils were recruited in primary schools, and 19.28 million graduated, with 107.12 million remained.

l         The annual R&D expenditure stands at 2,943 hundred million RMB, up 20.1%, 1.41% of GDP.

l         Total 573,000 patent applications were received in the year, of which 470,000 were from domestic, and 268,000 patent rights were granted, of which 224,000 to domestic applicants. Total 210,000 invention patent applications were received, of which 122,000 from domestic and 58,000 invention patent right were granted, of which 25,000 to domestic applicants.

l         There are 21,458 product examining laboratories at the year end, of which 325 of state level; total 184 organizations for certifying of product quality and quality systems; 18,053 observatory (stations) , of which 2,546 at state level, and 15,507 at regional level; seismic stations totals 1,253, and 31 Seismograph stations; 8,800 ocean observation stations.

Culture, Health and Sports

l         There are 2,767 public libraries, 1,593 museums, 296 TV stations at the end of 2006.  Total 41,600 million news papers, 3,000. m. periodicals, and 6,200 m. books have been published, and total 392 films produced.

l         There are 300,000 health organizations at the year end, of which 59,000 hospitals, 3,006 women and children health centres, 1,404 hospitals for special diseases, 3,587 disease prevention and controlling centres, and 2,256 sanitation supervision and examining organizations.  Beds at hospitals totals 3.90 million. Health technicians 4.53 million, of which 1.97 million certified doctors and assistant doctors, 1.39 million registered nurses.

l         Chinese athletes won 141 world champions at 24 items in 2006. In the 15th Doha Asian Games in Dec., 2006, Chinese athletes received 165 Gold medals, 88 Silver medals, 63 Bronze medals.

Population and Living Standard

l         National population stands at 1,314.48 million at the year end, 6.92 million more than the end of previous year. Urban and rural population was 577.06 million and 737.42 million respectively. Male and female population was 677.28 million and 637.20 million respectively.  Population at the age 65 and over stood at 104.19 million, 7.9% of the total. New born babies 15.84 million in the year, with the birth rate 12.09%; death person 8.92 million, with mortality rate 6.81%; and accrual rate 5.28%. The sex ratio is 119.25.

l         The  real spendable annual earnings per capita of urban people amounts to 11,759 RMB, up 10.4% y-o-y. The real annual income per capita of rural people being 3,587 RMB, up 7.4%. Food accounts for 35.8% of family expenditure for urban people, 43% for the rural. The poverty line was 693 RMB. The poverty population stood at 21.48 million at the year end, 2.17 million less than the previous year.

l         The national residence deposit balance at the year end being 161,587 hundred million RMB, which is 20,544 hundred million RMB more than the previous year.

Resource and Environment

l         Water resource 25,500 hundred million cube meters, decreasing 9.1% y-o-y, 1,945 c. m per capita. Total 5,670 h. m. c. m water used in the year, up 0.7%. 343 c. m. water used per capita.

l         2,460 million tons of (standard) coals were consumed in the year, up 9.3%. Of which, total coal consumption 2,370 million tons, up 9.6%; crude oil 320 million tons, up 7.1%; natural gas 55,600 million cube meters, up 19.9%; hydro-generated electricity 416,700 million kwh, up 5.0%; nuclear electricity 54,300 million kwh. Energy consumption per 10 thousand RMB of GDP stood at 1.21 tons of standard coals, down 1.23% y-o-y.
