In May this year, the total retail sales of the accommodation and catering industry in China reached 120.36 billion yuan, up 22.4% year on year and 7.3% quarter on quarter, 4.6 percentage points higher than that in the same period last year but 2.8 percentage points lower than that of April. From January to May, the total retail sales of the accommodation and catering industry in China reached 601.29 billion yuan, up 23.6% year on year, 5.9 percentage points higher than the growth range of the same period last year, 2.5 percentage points higher than the growth range of the total retail sales of social consumer goods, accounting for 14.2% of the total retail sales of social consumer goods of the same period, and as a result, the total consumer goods retail sales increased by 3.3 percentage points.
The May 12 Wenchuan earthquake caused great impact upon the catering market in Sichuan. In May, the turnover of the accommodation and catering enterprises was 710 million yuan, down 8.5% year on year. The impact on other quake-hit areas was not serious. Instead of declining, the turnover rate of the accommodation and catering enterprises in Gansu, Shaanxi and Chongqing increased by 17.2%、34.2% and 27.1% respectively. In general, the disaster areas have a relatively small catering market share in the country’s total. In 2007, the retail sales of the accommodation and catering industry in the four provinces and municipality, including Sichuan, Gansu, Chongqing and Shaanxi, accounted for 10.8% in the country. Among which Sichuan accounted for 6.2%, Gansu 1.1%, Chongqing 1.9%, and Shaanxi 1.6%. Therefore, the earthquake did not cause much impact on the country’s entire catering market. As the urban catering market in the disaster areas has been gradually restored, the country’s catering consumption shall continue to maintain a rapid growth rate. |
