How to read the Names of Chinese People
Tuesday,June 28,2005 Posted: 22:17 BJT(17 GMT)  驻保商务处

Do you know how to read the names of Chinese people correctly ? We take the majority -- Nan nationality for example. The names of Han people usually have 3 words, like Zhu Rong Ji (Chinese former Premier), but some of them have 2 words, like Wu Yi (Chinese Deputy Premier). The surname (Zhu) always stands at first, while the 2nd and 3rd words are given name, if in Chinese order. Usually, we put the 2 words given name together as one word as: Zhu Rongji, and in most cases we write the surname in capital letter as: ZHU Rongji, WU Yi. Remember never to read Mr Rongji, but Mr Zhu.

And now more and more Chinese people like to put the names in English order, in which the surname stands last, as: Rongji ZHU, Xiaoping DENG.
